The Meaning of Gemstones

Here is a brief guide to the folklore and legends of some of the most popular stones. The notes for each stone include ancient and modern beliefs world-wide and are shown as a mythological record only for interest and information.

The stones are created in the Earth slabs (plates) which move around by a few inches each year due to the activity in the Earth's central hot core and are formed by material rising and then solidifying.  Over millions of years due to different pressure, temperature, chemical or physical effects, a massive number of variations has been created - for example, a Ruby from Burma will tend to have a darker red hue than a Ruby from another area.

For those that believe in the power of crystals and gemstones, one of the more popular theories is that they have the capacity to absorb energies, emotions and knowledge and that the varying composition and structure of each variety results in each type absorbing different powers. These powers are then naturally imparted to the user.
